Ladybugs are associated with the Virgin Mary due to a legend that emerged in Europe during the Middle Ages. The legend states that farmers prayed to the Virgin Mary for help when their crops were being destroyed by aphids. Swarms of red, spotted beetles (ladybugs) appeared, devoured the pests, and saved the crops. In gratitude, the farmers named these beetles "Our Lady's beetles".
