Vintage Our Dear Lady of Rest Medal - Dutch Belgium Onze Lieve Vrouw van Rust - Crucifixion with the Virgin and St John
SKU: 12358Vintage aluminum Dutch medal that depicts the statue of Our Lady of Rest that is in Heppen, Belgium. The front depicts the statue Our Lady of Rest surrounded by the Dutch words "O.L. Vrouw van Rust b.v.o." which roughly translates to "Our Lady of Rest". Beneath the statue is "Heppeneert" which is Dutch for Heppen. The reverse side of the medal depicts the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This old medal shows definite signs of age and wear, It is rubbed smooth in areas from years of prayer so please see all photos and use the zoom feature if necessary.
In the parish church of Heppeneert near Maaseik, the Blessed Virgin Mary is worshiped under the title of Our Lady of Rest. This very old statue is a part of an oak passion table that was made in the early 16th century. It shows the Virgin in a resting position, her head bowed and her hands folded on her lap. Behind Mary is the apostle John, who looks up in contemplation. They are seated before the Crucified Jesus (not depicted in the statue). According to an old tradition, this statue washed ashore centuries ago, in the event of a flood through the Maas, in the village of Elen. A chapel was built in which the statue was placed for worship.
Heppen is a village in the Belgian province of Limburg and a part of Leopoldsburg. Heppen has an area of 9.57 km and in 2006 had 4264 inhabitants.
